Calgary - Eating in the Tower

Business class started with someone immediately asking us if we knew it was a business class queue, must have been the rucksacks. The lounge was great for a last feast before we headed off on our budget. The flight was quick with both us of us getting drunk on the endless champagne (well Lee anyway) before crashing on the flat beds, taking off backwards was a little strange but this is definitely the way to fly.

First day in Calgary, we decided to visit the Calgary Tower with great panoramic views across the city, with the Rocky Mountains in the background. Then we decided to test the revolving restaurant at the top for lunch quickly blowing 3 days food budget in the process. We visited the Glenbow Museum with exhibitions on the indigenous Blackfoot people and the "Mavericks" that forged the West. This quickly led to the revelation that it is unlikely we will be visiting any more museums on the trip. This afternoon, in glorious sunshine we visited Princes Island Park which would make a beautiful place for a picnic in the sun besides the Bow river.

What struck us about Calgary? People really wear stetsons and cowboy boots here, country music is being played everywhere, people are really friendly someone even let us use their mobile to call the hotel! Big wide streets, very clean and safe looking, maybe a bit soul-less.

And we're off!

And we're off, we've gone for the unusual combination of looking like backpackers- kit out with big ruck-sacks and rough clothing and opting for the business class round-the-world flight tickets (they actually work out pretty reasonably on the RTW ticket compared to normal flights, and we can raid the lounges for food and magazines). It will be interesting to see how the rest of the trip goes and whether we can stick to the budget we have given ourselves.

First stop is London Heathrow to catch our flight to Calgary, Canada.

Introduction

Well I guess this is more of a test than an introduction, should really check that we can use this site before we end up in the middle of nowhere resorting to scraps of paper to keep a record of our trip. Well we got married on the 5May in glorious sunshine at Birtsmorton Court and everything went perfectly, with enough good memories to keep us laughing for months. We've just got back off our honeymoon in New York where we went to our friends Scott + Jessica's wedding. What an occasion that was, very grand in the Waldorf and lovely to be just part of the supporting crowd watching them have a fantastic day. We nipped off briefly for 4 days in Bahamas, because it was cheaper to fly there and stay in a lovely hotel on the beach than in a crummy 2* hotel in the outskirts of New York leading up to the wedding.
Now we are back in Jersey and have decided to put our plan for some travelling into action. We are just finishing our round-the-world itinerary right now but the big day is likely to be 30May. Hopefully you'll keep on eye on this site while you are sitting at work :) and track our progress. Bye for now.
