It started as a pretty dull day although the weather in Canmore was no where near as bad as Calgary where we started our trip a week ago, they had one months rain in an hour with massive flooding, lightening strikes and mudslides. The roads where we were just three days ago broken up, cars completely underwater on some of the roads we walked on! Maybe our parents were right, we do leave a trail of devastation in our wake.We drove the short distance to Banff and had some lunch but with the weather clearing decided to quickly press on to our next location Lake Louise. After a suprise bill for entering the national park (per person, per day!). We decided to take the scenic route 1A rather than the much faster interstate and this turned out to be a great move. Within minutes of joining the road we saw this moose just by the side of the road watching the cars go by. Of course Lee forgot all about not going close to big mammals and walked over and clambered through the bushes and trees to get this photo. It was very big in real life. We spent the rest of the drive slowly cruising to see if we could see anything else. We did see some deer and chipmunks but these were all overshadowed by the moose.
The highway had various scenic spots marked out with room on the side of the road to park, and even in cloudy conditions there were some great sights. We took an unplanned trip to Johnston Canyon and Falls. We pulled off the side of the road and took the trail for a couple of miles. It was awesome, the creek swollen from the melting snow and rainfall the previous night was far more exhilarating than the pictures we had seen of it. The noise was constant and you were walking above or right next to the creek for the entire trail. We saw both the lower and upper falls with great views thanks to some catwalks that had been built. The spray from both was incredible and we got absolutely drenched.
