Arcata - Just inside California

Drove about 180 miles on the sometime winding coastal road and crossed the state line between Oregon and California, we're in Arnie territory now! Enjoyed some truly spectacular views on the Oregon coast and it is very tough to decide which photos to publish on our blog. We started the morning by waking up early for a change and heading to a local diner for some breakfast. Over ordered and ended up with a giant fry-up and monster pancakes each, but we struggled through! We noticed that the milk came from the Umpqua dairy which is quite funny because we had driven through Umpqua yesterday. Having just watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory while on the cruise we are breaking out into the "Upma Lumpa" song every time we see the name of this place (think orange midgets with green hair).
We drove through some gigantic Redwoods which towered above the car, we also decided to follow a small track which offered views of the Coast but was not suitable for large vehicles. Oh boy, it should have been labelled 4x4's only. The track alternated between being extreme gradients, single track with a precipitous drop on one side (and you guessed it two-way traffic at the worst possible times as you round a corner), and extremely rough conditions, almost dirt track. At one stage we parked close to a cliff edge for a closer look, the car next to us started moving forward. Vicky thought I'd forgotten to put the handbrake on and it was us going backwards towards the cliff!! Very glad to get back to the flat, well-marked wide Highway 101 after that. Although the views were pretty spectacular, with miles of golden beach and bright blue sea, white surf and cliffs.
